Old Italian bowl-back mandriola

This is an old, Italian bowl-back mandriola from the early 20th century with a wide fingerboard. It is in fair condition after restoration.  There is a label which says …

Alfredo Albertini

Catania

This instrument is now fully playable after restoration, and with evidence of some previous repair. The top is sound with no splits, but warping to one side of the sound hole. It has a 21-piece rosewood bowl back with almost invisible seam repairs. It has the original rosewood fingerboard with brass T-frets. The tuners and bridge and tail all seem original. It has been refinished throughout with shellac and a modern varnish. It has been restrung with ultra-light GHS bronze wound classical strings, and is now playing well with a bright, melodious sound with good sustain and volume. It has a fairly easy playing action.

Other than cleaning, I have repaired as follows… 1) repaired a little damage to the scratch plate; 2) levelled the rosewood fretboard; 3) levelled and dressed the original brass T-frets; 4) refinished throughout with shellac and tru-oil; 5) refitted the bridge; 6) restrung and set up.
