8. Old fado style flatback (281)  @  £200

Larger photos are available on request.

Old Portuguese flatback

A typical Portuguese, fado-style, flat-back mandolin, with a long scale length, heavily domed fingerboard and Preston tuners. It is in good condition after restoration. There are in fact two labels…. The top label says….

Custodio Cardoso Pereira & C.a

Almada, Porto & Lisboa.

The second, initially covered by the above, and presumably the original maker, says…

Manoel Rodriguese de Jesus

Ex-encarregado

Da casa Manoel Pereira, successor M. C. Teixeira

Rua Das Barracas No. 83

Lisboa No. 520

This instrument is fully playable. The top is sound with NO repairs, though I have filled a deep gouge.  It has a two-piece rosewood back with several repairs. It has its original domed rosewood fingerboard, with original, re-levelled frets. The tuners, bridge and tail are originals.  It has been re-finished throughout with Tru-oil, a light, modern, hard, oil-varnish. It has been restrung with light GHS bronze wound classical strings, and is now playing well with a well-balanced, bright, ringing tone. It has an easy action.

Other than cleaning, I have repaired as follows… 1) filled a gouge in the top with a spruce splint; 2) repaired several shrinkage splits in the back; 3) two small edging repairs; 4) repaired the tuners with 2 new tuner barrels; relevelled the frets; 5) refinished throughout with Tru-oil varnish; and 6) refitted the bridge and nut.

As it is takes double-loop strings, it will come with a spare set of strings with a second loop already wound. There after I am happy to sell sets as the buyer needs them

This instrument is now sound and plays very well. The Mandolin will be ‘tuned down’ and very carefully packed for posting. The box may afterwards be converted into a serviceable case.
