Old
Italian bowl-back This is an old, Italian bowl-back mandolin, made in the style of de Meglio mandolins. It is in good condition after restoration. There is a label which says… Francesco
Donadoni Fabbricante
di Strumenti Armonici Piaza
Garibaldi 82
The top is sound and has 1 small
repair. It has a
17-piece rosewood sound bowl back.
It has the original
rosewood fingerboard and original
brass bar frets, now re-levelled. The
tuners are original, but the
ebony bridge and tail are new. It retains its original finish
on the neck and head, but the bowl has been refinished with a shellac
finish. It has been restrung with ultra-light
GHS bronze wound classical
strings, and is now playing well with
a lively, ringing tone, with good volume and sustain.
It has an easy action.
The fingerboard and top have been treated with ‘Lem-Oil’ to inhibit
the adherence of grease.
Other than cleaning, I have repaired as follows… 1)
repaired 1 small shrinkage split in the front; 2) re-levelled the
original frets; 3) re-glued a loose top; 4) installed new edging; 5)
refinished the bowl with a shellac finish; 6) repaired damage to the
scratchplate; 7) made and fitted a new bone nut, and bridge in ebony; 8)
fitted a new tailpiece; and 9) replaced anti-vibration felting. |
