Old
German Hopf mandriola This is an old, German domeback mandriola, probably from the mid C20th, made by a reputable company. Tuned like a mandolin, this has a bigger fuller sound. It is in good condition after restoration. There is a top-stamp which say…. Original
“Hopf” ‘Hopf’ were
violin and instrument makers for 300 years in Klingenthal, before the
firm, C. Robert Hopf, was nationalized in 1972.
The top is sound but with a shrinkage
repair. It has a
domed 7-piece bowlback with NO
repairs. It has the
original ebony fingerboard and re-levelled
brass frets. The tuners and bridge are original. The
instrument body has been refinished
with Tru-oil, a hard, thin, modern varnish. It has been restrung with Pyramid
silver wound mandriola strings, and is now playing well with
a full, clear, ringing tone, and good volume.
It has an easy action.
Other than cleaning, I have repaired as follows… 1)
levelled the original frets; 2) repaired a split to the top and several
small dents and scrapes; 3) refinished the body with Tru-oil; and 4)
refitted the bridge. |
