Old
Italian bowl-back This is an old, Italian bowl-back mandolin. It is in good condition after restoration. There is a label which says… Giuseppe
Seraphino Garnotti & Co. Fabrica
d’Instrumenti Fatto
Napoli
The top is sound and has no repairs. It
has a 15-piece
rosewood bowl back with 1 repair. It
has the original rosewood fingerboard
and original ‘German silver’ bar frets.
The tuners
and tail are originals but
the
rosewood bridge is new. It retains its original ‘French
polished’ finish throughout. It has been restrung with ultra-light
GHS bronze wound classical
strings, and is now playing well with
a strong, ringing tone, and good volume and sustain, especially on the
lower strings. It has
an easy action. The
fingerboard and top have been treated with ‘Lem-Oil’ to inhibit the
adherence of grease.
Other than cleaning, I have repaired as follows… 1)
repaired 1 seam separations in the back; 2) re-levelled the original
frets; 3) fitted new scratch-plate; 4) re-installed the fingerboard on a
shim; 5) made and fitted a new bone nut, and bridge in ebony; and 4)
replaced anti-vibration felting.
