This is an old, Italian bowl-back mandolin. It is in good condition after restoration. There is a label which says… F.
de Mureda Fabbricante
di Strumenti Armonica 27
Vicolette 189_
This instrument arrived with a lot of cosmetic damage. The top is
sound and has no repairs. It has a
17-piece rosewood bowl back
with seam repairs.
There was damage to the neck and head, particularly the
veneer,
which has been renewed. It has a new rosewood fingerboard
and modern frets. The tuners
and tail are originals but
the ebony bridge is new. It has a new
Shellac finish, other than on the top. It has been restrung
with ultra-light GHS bronze
wound classical strings, and is now playing well with
a light, bright, melodious sound, not especially loud but good sustain ,
especially on the lower strings.
It has an easy action.
The fingerboard and top have been treated with ‘Lem-Oil’ to inhibit
the adherence of grease.
Other than cleaning, I have repaired as follows… 1) replaced
damaged head and neck veneer; 2) replaced a damaged thin old fingerboard;
3) repaired split back seams; 4) refinished with a shellac finish
throughout, except the top; 5) made and fitted a new ebony and bone
compensated bridge; repaired damaged tuners barrels; and 6) fitted new
string and anti-vibration felt.
