Old
French flat-back This is an old, French flat-back mandolin, with wider than usual fingerboard. It is in good condition after restoration. It has no
makers name, but is very similar to flatback models in the
Laberte-Humbert Catalogue of 1912. (See photo) It was repaired by Victor
Autiero of
This instrument is now fully restored. The top is sound with
NO repairs. It
has a single
piece stained-maple back and sides.
Repairs to damage in 2 places on the sides.
The original
ebony fingerboard is level and set
on a shim. It retains its original
re-levelled brass frets. The
tuners and tail are originals. The bridge has
been refitted, but is probably not original. It has been
refinished on top with Tru-oil for protection. The remaining finish is
mostly original, but has been touched up to remove scuffs, and around
repairs It has been restrung with ultra-light
GHS bronze wound classical
strings, and is now playing well with
a full, round sound, and fair volume. It has an easy action.
Other than cleaning, I have repaired as follows… 1)
repaired damage to the sides in 2 places; 2) replaced missing edging; 3)
set the f/b on a shim and levelled the frets; 4) replaced sound hole
edging; 5) refinished the top, and touched up elsewhere with a
shellac-based finish; 6) replaced a missing tuner button; 7) refitted
the bridge and new bone nut; and 7) renewed anti-vibration felting.
This instrument is now sound
and plays very well. The
Mandolin will be ‘tuned down’ and very carefully packed for posting.
The box may afterwards be converted into a serviceable case.
