Old
German dome-back mandriola This is an old, German domeback mandriola, which arrived in sad state. It is in fair condition after restoration. Tuned like a mandolin, this has a bigger fuller sound. There is no label.
The top is now sound with 2 shrinkage
repairs. It has a
domed back with several
repairs. It has the
original rosewood fingerboard and re-levelled
frets. The original tuners., but new bridge and
tail-piece. The instrument has been completely refinished. It
has been restrung with Pyramid
silver wound mandriola strings, (£25 per set) and is now playing
well with a bright, clear, ringing tone, and good volume.
It has an easy action.
The fingerboard and top have been treated with ‘Lem-Oil’ to inhibit
the adherence of grease.
Other than cleaning, I have repaired as follows… 1)
levelled the original frets; 2) repaired 2 small shrinkage splits in the
top; 3) repaired seam separations in the back; 4) fitted a removable
plug in an old pick-up hole in the lower side; 5) refinished throughout
with Tru-oil; 6) new tailpiece; and 7) fitted a new bridge and tensioner.
