Old
Italian bowl-back This is an old, Italian bowl-back mandolin. It is in good condition after minimal restoration. There is a label which says… F’lli
Ferrari & Co. Fabrica
e deposito di mandolini
The top is sound and has no repairs. It
has a 23-piece
rosewood bowl back with several seam
repairs.
It
has the original rosewood fingerboard
and original brass bar frets. The tuners and tail are originals but
the rosewood bridge is new. The body has
been refinished after repair with a shellac finsih. It has been restrung
with ultra-light GHS bronze
wound classical strings, and is now playing well with
a good, clear, ringing tone, and fair volume and sustain.
It has an easy action.
The fingerboard and top have been treated with ‘Lem-Oil’ to inhibit
the adherence of grease.
Other than cleaning, I have repaired as follows… 1)
repaired several seam separations in the back; 2) relevelled the frets;
3) refinished the bowl with a shellac finish; made and fitted a new
bridge in rosewood; and 4) replaced anti-vibration felting. |
