Old named French violin

'La Duchesse d'Angouleme'

This is an old, full-size, French violin. It is in good condition after restoration. There is a label inside (difficult to photograph) but like this, though lacking the date.…

This marque ‘La Duchesse d’Angouleme’, was manufactured by Joseph-François Breton at Mirecourt, up until his death in 1837, and then by Henry LAURENT and the brothers Nicolas et Michel Fourier until 1887. The label afterwards seems to have become ‘Public Domain’ and was used by several makers to produce this this very popular style of violin, which were mostly modelled after an original by Guarneri. It appears towards the end of the 19th century in the catalogues of  Thibouville and Laberte. Having no date, seems to put the construction of this instrument some time between 1887 and the end of the century. They are considered to be a good orchestral instrument.

This instrument is now fully restored by Olivier Flajollet, the luthier and bow maker in La Rochelle . Everything looks original except the bridge, tailpiece, and chin rest which seem to be new.
