Solid
German bowl-back
This is an old, German bowl-back mandolin. It is in
good condition after minimal
restoration. There is no label, but this is normal for instruments
made in the old
The original fingerboard,
is flat and true with original brass
frets. The top is in good condition with no repairs. It
has a 13-piece bowl with some seam
repairs.
The tuners,
tail and bridge are originals,. The top has been refinished
with Tru-oil, a modern, light, but hard, oil varnish, that allows
maximum vibration in the wood. Elsewhere original varnish has been
‘touched up’. It has been restrung with ultra-light
GHS bronze wound classical
strings, and is now playing well with
a light, bright well balanced sound.
It has an easy action.
The fingerboard and top have been treated with ‘Lem-Oil’ to inhibit
the adherence of grease.
Other than cleaning, I have repaired as follows… 1)
refinished the top; 2) touched up the finish elsewhere; 3)levelled the
original frets; and 4) refitted the bridge.
