Old
named Italian bowl-back This is an old, Italian bowl-back mandolin, in the de Meglio style. It is in good condition after restoration, and almost all completely original. There is a label which says… 'Marco
Rebora' Mandolini
e Gitarre Via
Roma, There
is also a small head-plate which says,
‘A.
Wilson Peck & Co: …and
the number W39533 is stamped on the back of the head.
This instrument is now fully restored. The top is sound but with
no repairs. It
has a 17-piece
rosewood bowl back with NO repairs. It
has its original fingerboard in ebony, with
re-levelled original brass frets. The
tuners and tail are originals.
The ebony bridge is new. It retains its original
French polished finish,
except for the head front which has been refinished with Tru-oil, and
the top, has a coat for protection. It has been restrung with ultra-light
GHS bronze wound classical
strings, and is now playing well with
a light, bright, ringing sound with good sustain.
It has an easy action.
Other than cleaning, I have repaired as follows… 1)
repaired cracked head-veneer; 2) replaced some missing bits of tulipwood
edging; 3) re-levelled
original frets; 4) fitted a new ebony bridge; 5) lightly finished the
top with Tru-oil; and 6) renewed anti-vibration felting.
