17. Old German domeback  (624)  @   250 euros

Old German bowlback mandola

This is an old, German bowl-back mandolin from the early to mid 20th century. It is in good condition after minimal restoration. There is a head label which reads…

This instrument is now fully restored. The top is sound with NO repairs. It has a 13-piece back in stained maple with one seam repair. It has the original fingerboard, with relevelled original frets. The tuners, bridge and tail are original, though the bridge has been remodelled to allow compensation. The instrument top has been lightly refinished with Tru-oil for protection, otherwise it retains its original finish. It has been restrung with phosphor bronze strings, and is now playing well with a full, round sound with good sustain and volume. It has an easy playing action.

Other than cleaning, I have repaired as follows… 1) repaired an open seam in the back; 2) remodelled the original bridge to add a bone saddle; 3) refinished the top with Tru-oil; 4) levelled the original frets; 5) replaced a missing tuner button; and 6) strung and set up.
