Old Italian bowl-back

This is an old, Italian bowl-back mandolin, with a new concert fingerboard installed. It is in good condition after restoration. There is a label which says…

Alfonso Moretti

Fabricant Mandolini

Napoli

And stamped across it is…‘imported by Ball Beavon & Co., London

The top is sound and has No repairs.  It has a 19-piece rosewood bowl back with 1 seam repair. It has the new concert rosewood fingerboard and new frets. The tuners and tail are original, but the ebony bridge is new. It retains its original French polished finish throughout. It has been restrung with ultra-light GHS bronze wound classical strings, and is now playing well with a bright, well-balanced, ringing tone, and fair volume. It has an easy action. The fingerboard and top have been treated with ‘Lem-Oil’ to inhibit the adherence of grease.

Other than cleaning, I have repaired as follows… 1) repaired 1 open seam in the back; 2) made and fitted a new concert fingerboard in rosewood; 3) fitted a new bone nut; 4) made and fitted a new ebony and brass bridge; and 5) renewed anti-vibration felt.
