Old, named, large-bodied, French flat-back

This is an old, Frenchflatback, from the early-mid 20th century. It has a narrow, but long scale, fingerboard, and is in good condition after restoration. It has a label, inside it says...

Rene Gerome

Fabrique de Mandolines, Banjos

This instrument is now fully restored. The top has shrinkage split repairs. It has a single piece, stained maple back. It has the original rosewood fingerboard and re-levelled ‘German silver' frets. The tuners and tail are originals, the bridge new. It retains it original finish which has been touched up with shellac. The top which has been refinished in Tru-oil. It has been restrung with light GHS bronze wound classical strings, and is now playing well with a well rounded sound and fair volume, but good sustain particularly. It has an easy action.

Other than cleaning, I have repaired as follows… 1) repaired 3 shrinkage cracks in the top; 2) over-varnished the original body varnish with shellac for protection; 3) repaired some open side seams; 4) dressed and levelled the original frets; 5) refinished the top with Tru0oil varnish; 6) made and fitted a new bone nut and rosewood bridge; and 7) restrung and set up.
