Late Gewa/Bohm Waldzither – normal tuners

This is an old domeback  Waldzither, made in Germany , mid 20th century by Gewa under the Bohm label, after they had taken over the firm, so it dates from after 1936  and before 1960ish. They continued to make Bohm style instruments, with Preston and normal heads.

It has the original rosewood finger-board and brass frets. The spruce top is in good condition, with ONE repair. The 2-piece ‘flat’ back is sound. The tuners are original, and in good condition, but the tail-piece and rosewood and bone bridge are new. The instrument top only is refinished in Tru-oil. It has been strung as a waldzither in C with Optima waldzither, silver-wound, strings, and is now playing well with a full, ringing, sonorous sound and an easy action.

Other than cleaning, I have carried out the following work on this instrument: 1) repaired 1 shrinkage splits in the top; 2) revarnished the top; 3)shimmed the original fingerboard for a better bridge height; 4) removed slight warpoing around soundhole and re-enforced beneath; 5)made and fitted new bridge in rosewood and bone; and 6) fitted new tail piece and strap button.
