9. Old French flatback mandolin (689)  @ 140 euros
Larger photos are available on request.

Old, un-named, large-bodied, French flat-back

This is an old, French flatback, from the early-mid 20th century. It has a new, semi-concert fingerboard, and is in good condition after restoration. It has no label or top stamp...

This instrument is now fully restored. The top has a shrinkage repair to the centre join. It has a two piece, stained maple back. It has a new ebony semi-concert fingerboard. The tuners and tail are originals, the bridge new. It retains it original finish which has been touched up with shellac. The top which has been refinished in Tru-oil. It has been restrung with light GHS bronze wound classical strings, and is now playing well with a well rounded sound, easy action and fairly good sustain.

Other than cleaning, I have repaired as follows… 1) repaired 1 shrinkage cracks in the top; 2) over-varnished the original body varnish with shellac for protection; 3) replaced some missing mop; 4) made and fitted a new fingerboard in ebony; 5) refinished the top with Tru-oil varnish; 6) made and fitted a new bone nut and compensated ebony bridge; and 7) restrung and set up.
