Old German lute-backed mndriola

This is an old, German lute-backed mandriola, probably from the mid 20th century. I have converted it into a an earlier 6-string mandolino. There is a label which says…

Meinel & Herold

Markneukirchen

Klingenthal S.A.

As this instrument was very hard to string as a mandriola, 3 strings to each string peg, I decided to convert it into a 6 string mandolino... tuned gdAEBG.

The top is sound with 2 shrinkage repairs. It has a 13 rib stained maple lute back with NO repairs. It has the original fingerboard in ebony, with re-levelled brass frets. The tuners have been replaced with pegs. The saddle and nut are new and bone.  It retains the original finish except for the top, which is finished in tru-oil. It is now playing well with a light, bright sound with nylgut strings. It has an easy playing action.

Other than cleaning, I have repaired as follows… 1) levelled the original frets; 2) replaced the tuners with pegs; 3) re-drilled the bridge holes to take 6 instead of 3 bridge pins; 4) altered the bridge to provide a good playing action with new bone saddle; 5) restained and finished the top with tru-oil; 6) fitted a new bone nut; and 7) restrung with nylgut strings.
